For many years, there have been concerns that septic tanks and other on-site wastewater treatment and disposal systems could cause ground and surface water pollution problems in many parts of Texas. For example, areas with heavy rainfall in East Texas often reported that septic tank wastes ran off into nearby streams after heavy rains.

The Texas Water Resources Institute (TWRI) is part of a national network of Institutes created by the Water Resources Research Act of 1964. Institutes are located at land-grant colleges and universities in the United States and its Territories so that they can benefit from the academic resources at the universities to address state and regional issues

The Lower Rio Grande Ecosystem Initiative (LRGEI) was established by the Biological Resources Division of the USGS (formerly the National Biological Service) to address research and information needs pertinent to the biotic resources of the river and its adjacent terrestrial habitats.

The Texas Speleological Survey (TSS) is non-profit corporation established in 1961 to collect, organize, and maintain information on Texas caves and karst. We make that information generally available for scientific, educational, and conservation purposes, and to support safe and responsible cave exploration.
