Local Hero: Martin Chapa - Austin, Texas

Martin Chapa of Austin, Texas, entered the National Bone Marrow Registry several years ago. The Registry is a large, worldwide database that provides a crucial genetic matching between those needing a bone marrow transplant and potential donors. Regististrants submit a small sample of blood that is typed and entered into the registry. Martin was recently identified as a perfect match for a fourteen-year-old Hispanic girl with leukemia.

Local Hero: Keith Wells - Abilene, Texas

Keith Wells is going back to the Marines. The retired major, whose platoon raised the American flag on Iwo Jima in 1945, has been invited by the Commanding General Marine Forces Atlantic in Norfolk, Va., to provide educational lectures to area servicemen.
